St. John the Baptist monastery is located in the city of Astrakhan and is an active Orthodox monastery.

The monastery was founded in 1688 outside the Earthen city, the river Kutum. The initiator of the construction was made by Metropolitan of Astrakhan Savvaty, which has allocated all the necessary funds. We also know that in 1688 the elder Alexander with the brothers started the construction of a stone church in honor of the Holy Prophet and Forerunner John. Presumably, in the monastery at that time there was already a wooden church.

The monastery and its inhabitants were waiting for the ordeal. For example, in 1692 during the plague he died all the brethren and the abbot - father of Alexander. Construction of the stone church was delayed and it was consecrated only in 1697, under the new Metropolitan Sampson. The entire territory of the monastery was surrounded by stone walls around the perimeter of the corners rose four towers. While Ivanovsky monastery, as it was called by the people, not only played a role in the spiritual life of Astrakhan, but also had an important military significance.

In 1723 the monastery was abolished and the hospital is located in the premises. However, five years later it was restored. In 1884, the monastery opened the parish school. But the hard times for the monastery is not over. So, in 1919 it was closed again, and the buildings were used as a warehouse and accommodation. In 1940 the bell tower was dismantled and the temple gate in the name of St. John the Warrior.

The revival and reconstruction of the monastery began in 1992. Update temple completed in 2008.
