St. Cyril monastery Chelmogorsky

Cyril and Chelmogorsky monastery cloister is elided. It is located south-east of the village Morschihinskaya Kargopol District of the Arkhangelsk region between Lake Lekshmozero and monastery. Now from the monastery remained only ruins.

In 1316 St. Cyril Chelmogorsky, a monk of the monastery of St. Anthony of Novgorod, resided continuously on Mt. Chelma owned lands Peipsi. In the cave he spent the first winter, and later built a wooden hut and a chapel. By the end of the life of St. Cyril of the entire local population has been baptized. For converts Monk church was built in honor of the Epiphany. St. Cyril died in December 1368. 10 years after his death, in 1378 Hieromonk Arseny Chelmogorsky founded St. Cyril monastery.

In the XV century it was built a new Church of the Epiphany with a chapel in the name of Catherine the Great .  Ivan IV the Terrible presented the Cyril-Chelmogorskomu monastery arable land, fields under the meadows, forests, lakes and small rivers and ordered to transfer to the monastery of the revenue Kargopol .  There are versions that the monastery has been sent to one of the wives of Ivan the Terrible .  In 1599, there were forcibly tonsured wife Dmitry Kurlyateva-Obolensky and his 2 daughters .  In the years 1612-1615 the monastery several times devastated Lithuanians .  In 1633, the Metropolitan of Novgorod and Velikolutsky Cyprian issue Cyril and Chelmogorskomu monastery letter with a blessing on the construction of two churches: the Mother of God and of the Epiphany .  In 1637, the monastery received another letter with a blessing on the construction of the Temple III of the Holy Gate in the name of Catherine the Great .  Church of St. Catherine is not mentioned in chronicles in 1656 after he probably burned .  In 1674, she died in the fire of Church of the Annunciation, and in its place was built the Assumption .  In addition, the monastery was his farmstead in the town of Kargopol . 

In 1727, Cyril and impoverished Chelmogorsky attributed to the monastery Spaso-Kargopol. In 1732 the monastery was independent, but in 1751 he was again assigned to the Saviour Monastery Kargopol. In 1764, by decree of Catherine II, St. Cyril Chelmogorsky monastery was liquidated. Two monastery turned into a parish church. In the years 1844-1845 on the site of the old temple of the Epiphany merchant Mikhail Lytkin built a new Epiphany Cathedral with the Chapel of St. Cyril Chelmogorskogo. In 1845 the building of the former monastery were given to Alexander Oshevensk monastery.

In 1880 the monastery was obtained Chelmogorskim relative (but not officially confirmed by) independence. In 1880 and 1887 he was going through fire. Epiphany Church newly rebuilt in 1897-1899 years. In 1904, the Holy Synod of the monastery gives independence. In 1917, the Metropolitan of Petrograd Veniamin blessed Cyril monastery building-Chelmogorskoy Epiphany desert in Petrograd. In June 1918, the consecration of the chapel are held in the name of the Holy Martyr Hermogenes.

In 1932, after the arrest of monks and clergy, Cyril and Chelmogorsky monastery was abolished forever, wooden monastery buildings demolished, including the Church of the Assumption. At present the former monastery remained only ruins. In 2005, Bishop Tikhon of Arkhangelsk and Kholmogory was consecrated near the spot where the monastery, worship cross in memory of Saint Cyril Chelmogorskogo.
