Cathedral of St. Maurice (Saint-Maurice) counts its history back to 1023 when in place of the burnt church was built a new church on the orders of two bishops - Norman de Dua and Guillaume de Beaumont.
Today, the Cathedral of Saint-Maurice is one of the main attractions of Angers, a national historic landmark and the center of the Diocese of Angers. In the medieval cathedral of St. Maurice, even pretended to be stored in the walls of one of the most important Christian shrines - the head of John the Baptist, but lost its cathedral in Amiens.
Currently, the Cathedral of Saint-Maurice is recognized as an outstanding architectural structure, in the form which you can see the traits of different styles - Romanesque, Gothic, in particular, its rare species, known as the "Angevin Gothic", originated in Angers and widespread in the western part of France in XII-XIII centuries. The cathedral was built in the shape of a cross. Its facade on both sides as if to protect the two towers which in the XVI century were decorated with sculptures of knights who accompanied the holy Mauritius. During the life of Mauritius was a Roman legionary, but his companions and in the Middle Ages is sometimes portrayed in knightly garb. These sculptural elements have been made in the Renaissance style by the architect Jean Delespenom.
Ornaments of the Cathedral are also murals with scenes from the life of St. Mauritius, stained the XIII century, recognized as a masterpiece of glass crafts, stained glass paintings and other altar, created in the middle of the XVIII century in the Rococo style. In the XIX century it was carried out restoration of the cathedral. Earlier in the cathedral tapestries kept the work of Nicolas Bataille, who lived in the XIV century and is acknowledged as the best master in Paris at the time. Now, these tapestries are presented in the castle of Angers. The cathedral is located next to the castle, in the historic center of the city.
