Abbey Roncero is located in the heart of Angers, about half a kilometer away from the cathedral of St Maurice, but on the other side of the river Maine. The area in front of the castle is called La Dutra (translated as "the other side"). Buildings Abbey are in the central square of La Dutra, located next to the hospital in Saint-Jean, which is from the XII century to the middle of the XIX century, served as a hospital for the poor, and today in its walls housed a museum of contemporary tapestry. The monastery was founded in 1028 and is the only convent in Angers and at the same time one of the largest in the diocese, together with the monastery Fontenvro. The abbey was built during the reign of Count of Anjou Fulk III Nerra that, strengthening its ownership, built many castles and other structures.
The abbey was rebuilt several times - in the 70 years of XI century, the beginning of the XII century. In XVII-XVIII centuries in the complex of the abbey appeared several buildings, including the type of monumental gates from the street Tsenzeri. In the southern part of the abbey is the church of the Holy Trinity, built in the XII century.
In the XVI century in the monastery engaged in the manufacture of tapestries, so today the abbey is located near the museum dedicated to this kind of weaving. It contains the famous fabric of the XX century "Song of Peace" - a grand cycle, made by Jean Lurcat, textile artist, who lived in the first half of the last century. The building of the former orphanage abbey today is the National School of Arts and Crafts. The territory of the abbey is also becoming a venue for art exhibitions and festivals.
The interior of the abbey attracted tourists with its Romanesque galleries and ancient frescoes.
