At the end of the XIX century, Amsterdam was a significant event for the city. On a vacant lot in the southern part of the city it was built just three buildings, which are now form a museum area and play a crucial role in the lives of not only Amsterdam but also the whole kingdom. It is the State Museum (Rijksmuseum, 1885), Concert Hall (1888) and the Municipal Museum (Stedelek-myuzeum, 1895).

First City Museum tells the history of Amsterdam. There were exhibited period furniture and utensils, as well as the insignia of the Amsterdam police. In the early XX century, the profile of the museum is somewhat different. The museum collections are beginning to appear not only objects of decorative art, paintings and contemporary artists - paintings and drawings. Stedelek-myuzeum the first museums of modern art began to purposefully collect and exhibit photographic work.

The museum presents almost all areas of modern art. Here assembled a large collection of works by Russian artists of the early XX century: Chagall, Kandinsky, Malevich. In the museum you can see works by Cézanne, Picasso, Monet, Renoir. Much attention is given to representatives of the most modern trends and directions. In general, the museum's collection includes about 90 000 items and continues to grow.

In 2012, it opened a new building of the museum.
