Jewish Historical Museum - Museum in Amsterdam about the history, culture and religion of the Jewish people, both in the Netherlands as well as worldwide. In the Netherlands, it is the only museum devoted to Jewish history.
The museum was opened in February 1932. Originally it was located in a former city Waag at the New Market Square. During World War II, when the Netherlands was occupied by Nazi troops, the museum was closed and looted artifacts. After the war, he was able to collect only a fifth of them. The museum collection is enriched with time, and in 1987 the museum moved to the former building of the Great Synagogue. These buildings were not used for religious purposes since 1943, and before putting the museum there was a large-scale reconstruction. Where possible, the buildings of the complex was returned to the form of the XVIII century, but together they combine modern passages of glass and concrete - it symbolizes that the conversion of the synagogue into a museum - a revolutionary and unprecedented event.
Initially, the museum told mainly about history and religion, but after the war, more attention is paid to the culture. The museum has a large collection of paintings, executed or Jewish artists or related to the history of the Jewish people. Also it appeared in the post-war museum section devoted to the Holocaust.
Now the museum's collection of more than 13 000 exhibits, as well as tens of thousands of books and publications. The permanent exhibition presents only a small part of the exhibits - Other participate in exhibitions in other museums around the world, or are stored in the vaults.
