Construction of the castle was carried out under the direction of military engineer Pablo Ordovas Sastre. His defensive role in the war with the French, the castle was never fulfilled due to the fact that the French interrupted their advance towards Alicante, concentrating all power in the military campaign against Russia.

The basis of the bastion of the fortress consists of two interconnected wall transitions, ensuring free movement within the fortress its defenders. At the foot of the fortress dug deep ditch, inside the fort is a large tank, if necessary, providing shelter from enemy fire. Also on the territory of the fortress are powder magazine, storehouses of weapons, provisions, water tanks.

For a long time the fortress of San Fernando was in a state of neglect, causing the displeasure of the local people. To date, the area of the castle was restored, and there, on the slopes of the mountains, organized a huge park with lots of sports and entertainment venues.
