Alexandria Opera House is located in the heart of the Egyptian port city, on the street, Tariq al-Gorey, near the area of ​​Ramla. City of Alexandria - is not only the largest port in the Middle East, it is also one of the cultural centers of Egypt.

Alexandria was founded by Alexander the Great in 331 during his glorious military campaign in Persia and was given the name of the great commander. The building, which houses the Opera, built during the reign of Sultan Fuad I, in 1918, designed by architect George barges from France for the Egyptian rich Badr al-Din Kerdan, opened a theater and gave him the first name - Muhammed Ali Theatre. In 1921, it held its grand opening. Although Alexandria opera was not the only one in Egypt (all three operas in the country, including the famous Cairo), it enjoyed the deserved attention of renowned Arab and foreign artists. In 1962, the theater was given a new name - Sayed Darwish, one of the authors of the national anthem of Egypt (until 1979).

In 2000 the dilapidated by the time the opera house with luxurious interiors have been included in the list of Egyptian heritage. Nearly four years was the reconstruction of the theater building, construction and restored to its former elegance and interior beauty. At the opening in 2004 revived the opera house now present the deposed Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.
