The climax of the historic city Alatyr called the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, rising on the left bank of the river Sura. Founded Cathedral, and the neighborhood as a Baptist church in the 1550's, during the construction of the walled city Alatyr.

In June 1770 the means of tradesman Bogolyubov was built warm stone building with a five-sided apse of the cathedral, a three-tiered bell tower and a small refectory. From the south and the north quadrangle adjacent to the side of the room in terms of forming a cross. The central part of the temple is completed the dome and cupola on a round drum. The second tier of the western part of the quadrangular arranged choruses. Making different facades restrained decor. Like many churches Alatyr, Nativity Cathedral was destroyed in the 1930s. The bell tower was destroyed and the old wall paintings were completely destroyed. In 1993, the cathedral was returned to believers.

Today, fully restored building of the cathedral and is an architectural monument. Feature Alatyrsky Nativity Cathedral - a modern baptistery (baptistery). The area landscaped cathedral and next to the temple is a wooden well in the old Russian style with a cupola.

In the same area with the cathedral is the oldest cathedral church of Chuvashia - Beheading of John the Baptist built in 1703, and the Sign of St. Nicholas Church, built in 1779.
