On the right bank of the Sura River, opposite the town Alatyr is specially protected natural territory - Alatyr arboretum named G.A.Sulimo Samuylov-formed in order to preserve and enrich the flora, as well as for scientific, educational and training activities.

Republican arboretum was founded in 1960 by enthusiasts, nature lovers, headed by the Civil War and labor veteran Gregory Aniolovichem Sulimo-Samuylov. The initial area of ​​the park was not more than ten hectares and it was called "Alatyr Pioneer Forest Park-arboretum". Under the leadership of Gregory Aniolovicha for twenty years, the organizers of the forest park fruitfully cooperated with many domestic and foreign reserves. The result of enthusiasts - vegetation in the park of rare plant species from the Baltic states, Ukraine, Altai, Urals, Siberia and Far East, as well as unique items from Tibet, India, China and Japan. In 1973 Alatyr arboretum he was deservedly awarded the diploma of the third degree ENEA, and in 1978 won first place in the competition of the most valuable forest objects RSFSR.

Today Alatyr arboretum covers an area of ​​over 230 hectares and is one of the best collections of valuable plants in Chuvashia. The forest park grow more than a hundred species of plants, of which the highlights: Far cherry, Ussuri pear, Manchurian walnut, Siberian fir, Altai cedar, magnolia Chinese, Japanese spirea and krasnolistnyh barberry. One of the avenues of the park is named after the first cosmonaut - Yuri Gagarin.

Alatyr arboretum is bordered by a park "Dukhovskaya Grove", the river and the river Sura Abyss, presenting a picturesque tourist attraction and a great place rest of the townspeople.
