Temple of Aphaea

On top of the hill above the resort Ayiya Marina is a fairly well-preserved Doric temple Attai, built in times of economic and cultural development of the island at the beginning of the V century BC

In the upright position are 24 columns of the first and second tiers. Corner columns have been specially thickened to instill a sense of power and smooth optical effect of thinning columns. Inside was a cella with a sculptured statue of the goddess, which did not spare the time, and a swimming pool with olive oil for the sacrificial libations.

In 1811, during the excavation of the temple were found sculptures pediments depicting the battle between the mythological characters. Now the original gables are on display in Munich Glyptothek.
