An important historical attraction in Aalborg is the Church of the Virgin Mary. Originally the building was a small church, but over time at the site of the church was built a monastery, which impresses with its size.
Presumably, the Benedictine monastery was built in 1116, although the views of historians disagree: some argue that the date of foundation - 1132. It is known that in 1140 in the walls of the church was buried Norwegian King Sigurd Magnusson, as evidenced by the records of the monastery priest Kjeld Calva.
By the mid-16th century Abbey consisted of a monastery church, monastic cells and outbuildings. Later, the temple of the Virgin Mary was one of the main temples of the city parish. Because of dilapidation of the building in 1876 it was decided to demolish it and at the same location to build a new church. Two years later, a new church was built in the Gothic style of the old buildings remained only two bells and the remains of a stone carving on the west pediment.
Who is the most impressive temple tower with a spire and a porch with a relief image of the Virgin Mary. Inside the church is a body that was built in 1961 (with gold and decorated with flowers), a beautiful old pulpit, carved in wood in 1581, baptismal font of the XVII century, and the late gothic crucifix. Until 1902 in the premises of the cathedral was placed an altar of the XVII century, but because of the fire, it burned down and was replaced by a new one.
Every year the monastery is visited by many tourists from all over the world.
