Monastery of the Holy Spirit - one of the most important historical monuments in the city, located in the old center of Aalborg, near the square and streets Gemmel Torv Aubel Place.

In the early 15th century Aalborg was one of the largest cities in Europe. Residents of the city at that time were considered rich enough, for this reason, in Aalborg on earnings tend to get a lot of people - Danes and foreigners. Maren Hemmings was quite wealthy woman and decided to help disadvantaged people by organizing a shelter for their money.

August 20, 1431 on the land of his father's legacy Marin began the construction of the future of the Monastery of the Holy Spirit, but in 1434, during the great fire, the temple was burned down. Over time, a new monastery was built in a form that we can see today. In the monastery in 1451 the monks of the Order of the Holy Spirit opened a hospital and a shelter for the poor and orphans.

The temple was built of red brick in the Gothic style, inside the church walls and ceilings are decorated with unique frescoes of biblical scenes. At the monastery was a gorgeous garden and fountain.

In the early 16th century, the monastery of the Holy Spirit evolved from a poor shelter in a thriving organization. At the temple was erected its own farm, a mill, additional earnings temple brought proceedings in the manufacture of bricks and fishing. During the Reformation in the 16th century Monastery of the Holy Spirit has lost its religious component, the ordinary shelter and left the hospital. Collegiate Church was destroyed by the inhabitants of the city.

In 1953 the monastery of the Holy Spirit was returned to the spiritual status, it is housed a nursing home. Today, the monastery is open for free visits.
