Synagogue in Zamosc - this is one of the most well-preserved synagogues in Poland, built in the style of the late Renaissance. The synagogue is located in the Old City in the center of Zamosc.
The synagogue was built in 1610-1620 years on the initiative of Jews living in the city. The first synagogue appeared in 1590's, but it was built of wood. As soon as the Jews were lifted restrictions prohibiting them build stone buildings, construction work began.
Synagogue, made in the late Renaissance style, perfectly fit into the overall architectural style of the city. In the second half of the 17th century it was built north and south walls that formed a prayer hall for women. In the 18th century it was added a modest lobby in the western part of the prayer hall, and built on the second floor. Exterior walls are extended upwards. Walls and ceilings are decorated with rich stucco synagogue decoration, floral motifs were widely used. On the east wall is still preserved synagogue ark - storage Torah scrolls. It dates from the first half of the 17th century, richly decorated stone carved frame. The prayer hall was decorated with magnificent chandeliers, the originals of which have not survived to the present day.
During the Second World War, the Nazis turned the synagogue into a carpentry workshop. In the postwar years it has been reconstructed, after which the building was transformed into a public library in 1958.
In March 2005, Public Library moved into another building, and the synagogue was returned to the Jewish community. Since then began the painstaking restoration work under the direction of Foundation for the Preservation of Jewish Heritage. Until 2008, the synagogue was closed to visitors.
In early April 2011 the opening ceremony of the restored synagogue in the same year it was listed on the National Register of Historic Monuments. Currently it planned to place in the Museum Jews in Zamosc, and the opening of a local educational center, which will hold cultural events, exhibitions, lectures and workshops.
