Elabuga is considered an architectural symbol of the Savior Cathedral, located on the embankment of the river Toima and built in 1808-1816, respectively. The five-domed church with a bell tower the majestic height of 57 meters, built in the style of Russian classicism and is dominant in the panorama of the historic city.

At the site of the cathedral in the name of the Saviour back in the sixteenth century was a wooden church. In 1684 a stone church was built, but in 1780 became a district Elabuga city and the church no longer accommodate all the faithful. In 1808, begins the construction of the magnificent temple with unusually elongated refectory. Until the revolution of Elabuga merchants of Charity (Staheevy, Girbasovy, rough, Shishkin) participate in the life of the church. Painted Temple famous artists: Vasily Vereshchagin and IA Bruni. The first bell to the temple with his own cast a grandfather of the artist - Vasily Shishkin Afanasievich. In early 1918, the rector of the Savior Cathedral Pavel Dernov together with his sons, was shot by the Red Guards. The temple was ruined, but the main shrine of the temple (the icon of the miraculous image of Our Saviour) was saved and today adorns the St. Basil's Cathedral.
