The Byzantine Museum of the Greek city of Ioannina (capital of Epirus) is located in one of the buildings of the Citadel, also known as the Acropolis Ich Calais. The central section was built in the 1960s, and initially functioned as a Royal Pavilion. The museum was opened to the public in 1995.
The museum presents a collection of early Christian and Byzantine sculptures, unique artifacts from excavations in Arta, architectural fragments, ceramics, ancient manuscripts, first editions of printed books, post-Byzantine icons and much more.
Among the most valuable and interesting exhibits of the Byzantine Museum is worth noting the marble fragment of the iconostasis of Glick, decorated with relief image of the birds on the front side and a floral pattern on the bottom surface (late 12th - early 13th century), the first printed edition of the "Comments" Simplicius to works of Aristotle (1499, Venice, printing N . Vlastos), the manuscript of the Gospel of Molivdoskepastos Monastery (1575) and the icon of the famous Cretan artist Theodoros Pulakisa (second half of the 17th century) . No less interesting and clay icon from the east pediment of the Church of St. Basil in Arta (14th century), a fragment of the painting of the Virgin Mary Church of Vulgareliona (1281), wall painting from a rich house in Ioannina with the image of the legendary Battle of the Milvian Bridge (Alexandros Dimiris, 19th century), the left door of the altar of the church of St. Nicholas of Perama (15th century) and the icon of St. Catherine . Excellent collection of silverware is exhibited in a separate building from the 19th century, .
Today, the Byzantine Museum - one of the most exciting and popular attractions of Ioannina. Unique relics kept in the museum represent a high historical and artistic value.
