Warsaw Siren - symbol of the city of Warsaw, is depicted on the emblem of the city. The first image siren appeared in 1390. Then the siren was quite different: the bird with the legs and body of a dragon. In 1459 the picture changed: the bird's legs were replaced by a fish tail, the human body and bird paws with sharp claws.
It is believed that the adoption of this coat of arms is a tribute to medieval fashion, which recommended to select cities in the characters of mythical creatures. There is an urban legend about the appearance of a mermaid:
Once upon a time, sailed from the Atlantic Ocean to the Baltic Sea two sisters - sirens, beautiful women with fish tails, living in the depths of the seas. One of them caught up in the Danish waters, was left to sit on a rock at the entrance to the port of Copenhagen. The second sister sailed to the coast of Gdansk, and then found herself in the waters of the Vistula River and swam to the old town. A rich merchant, hear beautiful singing mermaid caught it for profit. He made it to the wooden shed without access to water. Crying siren heard the young son of a fisherman and a mermaid night freed. Siren in gratitude for the fact that people have defended her, promised, if necessary, to defend Warsaw. That's why the siren is armed - in her hands a sword and a shield to defend the city.
Currently, the Polish capital can see the two monuments siren. The sculpture is set on the market square of the Old Town and is the work of sculptor Constantin Hegel. The second monument is located on the waterfront next to the street Tamka. This sculpture was created by Ludwig Nochovym in 1939.
