Basilica of the Virgin Mary - the majestic medieval Vrsar attraction, located in the port city. This church is a valuable monument of Romanesque architecture in Istria and its history of more than fascinating.
In the era of the Roman Empire on the site of the church was allegedly Villa Rustica - a luxury vacation home. Modest church came into this place in the early Middle Ages (about the second half of the VIII century). In the period from VIII to XII century, the church was rebuilt more than once, so its current architectural and artistic image of the left since the last change in the XII century. In the following years the church was repaired, the last time was in 1969.
Monumental in its architecture resembles the early Christian basilica of the church (its area is 24, 5 x 12, 5 meters). Ljubo Karaman, Croatian historian who studies art, claims that the appearance of the basilica is in the spirit of the first ordinary Christian buildings.
The facade of the basilica with round windows is very simple. The eastern part of the church takes monofora bell, ie the window with one opened the archway crowned. The interior of the church is impressive: a huge arch in the Romanesque style and round columns divide the temple into three parts, and the floor is decorated with an inscription in Latin.
