At the heart of the city of Kamyshin, Volgograd region is a monument to the legendary fighter pilot Alexei Petrovich Maresjev established in May 2006. The author of the monument is the Honored Artist of Russia - Sergey Shcherbakov. The idea of ​​erecting a monument close to the house where he was born and grew up the legendary pilot, came from residents of Kamyshin after the death of Alexei Petrovich in May 2001. Alexei Petrovich, born in Kamyshin in 1916, became known worldwide after the release of the novel war correspondent Boris Polevoy "The Story of a Real Man," where he became the prototype for the main character - a pilot Meresyev. In April 1942, the plane was hit and Maresiev Alexei Petrovich was forced to land in enemy territory. Badly wounded pilot eighteen days crawling gets to the front line. The heroism and courage Maresiev left without legs, but has risen again in the sky and the last of the war when he was a Hero of the Soviet Union, touched the hearts of people.
