Mirkovtsy

Mirkovtsy - a small village in the southeast of the town of Vinkovci, which is, in fact, is its suburbs. The first mention of the settlement dates back to 1475.

In 1734 there are already 60 houses. In 1791, the town consisted of 107 houses, inhabited by a total of 791 people. At the beginning of the XIX century part of the population moved to Bosnia or Serbia, so by 1810 there remained only 738 people.

After a devastating World War II, this area occupied by the Serbs, which was the reason for the increase in the population of the village - the total number of inhabitants has risen to nearly a thousand. According to the subsequent post-war census, the number of people only increases. Thus, according to the 1981 to 2940 inhabitants lived Mirkovtsah 2600 of which - the Serbs.

During the war for Croatian independence was based in the village Mirkovtsy various Serbian paramilitary forces, and the proximity of a large city Vinkovci allowed the military operational plan military campaigns in the area between the village and the town. Thus, residents of the village often had to live under shelling. In 1998, after the reintegration impressive part of the township Mirkovtsy began to sell their homes and move to Serbia and other neighboring countries.

Of interest here is worth mentioning the church of St. Nicholas, which belongs to the Serbian Orthodox Diocese of eastern Croatia.
