Museum of Contemporary Art in the Galician city of Vigo was opened November 13, 2002. Located in the heart of the city, the museum is housed in the former court and prison. The building itself was built in the 19th century by the architect Jose Maria Ortiz, and Sanchez. Initially, the building was planned to organize a prison, but later, in addition to the prison cells, are located there as court rooms and rooms for the guards. Exactly a century later, the city government issued a decision to demolish the building and arrange its location area, surrounded by trees, but after a stormy protest group of architects and a professor of art history building was declared cultural heritage.

In 1995 it was decided to reconstruct the building and the organization within the walls of the Museum of Modern Art. Reconstruction works by architects Salvador Rivas, Francisco Garcia Romero-Kihada Portolesa and San Juan, which has contributed more than 2 million euros, carried out over several years. And so, in 2002, the grand opening of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Vigo.

The main idea of ​​the museum is not only a demonstration of visitors collections and exhibitions relating to contemporary trends in art, but also the promotion of modern ideas, trends, movements and promoting young emerging artists. Today, visitors to the museum have the opportunity to get acquainted with the exhibits relating to areas such as sculpture, architecture, painting, fashion, design and digital art.
