Chuprene one of the largest biosphere reserves in Bulgaria, whose total area reaches 1439 2 hectares. Located close to the reserve Midžor - the highest point of the East Serbian mountain range. It Vidin region, village Chuprene. Near the river Chuprenska. In addition, the reserve borders with Serbia. The area evaded about one kilometer from the height above the water level (1,100 meters) and to the higher altitude (2004 meters).

Reserve was formed February 9, 1973 with the purpose of protection of coniferous forests in the north of Bulgaria, as well as the ornithological reserve to preserve the country's only natural population of wood grouse. Since 1977, the reserve added to the list of biosphere reserves under the UNESCO program entitled "Man and Biosphere". In addition, experts have identified the isolated territory, an area of ​​over 542 hectares - "Chuprenski-Buki" that should be protected.

Part of the reserve occupied by rivers that source at the nearby slopes, among which the most important are the Lom, Chuprenska, Vyrboska, Krastavichka and Bukovska.

With regard to the reserve, on the order of 90% is covered by forest, mostly spruce and fir pine and spruce-beech mixed. Also part of the area occupied by the age-old spruce forests, which are important for those who are engaged in the study of such forests in the Balkans. In addition, among others can be found here maple, aspen, mountain alder, mountain maple and black elderberry.
