Santa Maria dei Carmini, also known as Santa Maria del Carmelo, or simply carmine, - a small church in Venice's Dorsoduro quarter. She huddled next to the building of the former Scuola Grande di Santa Maria del Carmelo. This congregation was founded back in 1597, the year and grew out of the women's charitable organization "Pintsokkere dei Carmini". Members of the society are often attributed to the Carmelite Order, because they were engaged in embroidery for Carmelite monks Shoulders.
Initially, the church was called Santa Maria Assunta, and the first records of it date back to the 14th century. The facade of brick and marble sculptures preserved lunettes made by Giovanni buor, and among the decorations, you can see the pictures of the prophets Elijah and Elisha, who are considered the founders of the Carmelite Order. The bell tower, built by the architect Giuseppe Sardi, is topped with a statue of the Madonna del Carmine, made in 1982 by sculptor Romano Vio. This statue is installed in place of the original, which was destroyed by a lightning strike.
The altar and the side chapels of the church were rebuilt in 1507-14 th years by the Swiss Sebastiano Mariani from Lugano. Inside you can see a grandiose monument to Jacopo Foscarini, former procurator of San Marco and the Navy admiral. Family Foscarini Palace is located opposite the church on the other side of the channel. The second altar is decorated with the work of Cima da Conegliano "Adoration of the Magi." Among the other works of art worth mentioning the painting Paz Pace and Giovanni Fontana, statues and Giuseppe Antonio Corradini Torritti, bronze angels on the balustrade - the work of Girolamo Campagna, wooden pediment with carved Bernadoni Francesco and Giovanni Skalfarotto ark. Also in the church you can see many frescoes and magnificent stucco and admire the magnificent altarpiece Jacopo Tintoretto mid-16th century.
