Burano - island located 7 km from Venice, located in its administrative authority. You can get here in just 40 minutes by boat "vaporetto". According to the latest census on Burano is home to about 3 million people.

In fact, Burano is comprised of four separate islands, which are separated by a narrow, only 10 meters wide channels - Pontinello Rio in the west of Rio Dzuekka in the south and the east of the Rio Terranova. Once there was also a fifth island, but its passage was covered with earth and turned into the Via Baldassare Galuppi street, is connected to the islands of San Martino Destra and San Martino Sinistra.

Probably, the first inhabitants of Burano are the Romans, to the place that in the 6th century AD people came from the city of Altino. There are two versions of the origin of the name of the island. On one of them, the island is called by the name of an ancient family Burian. According to another - Burano derives its name from a small island Buranelli, is 8 km south.

Despite the fact that soon after the colonization of the island turned into a prosperous commune, he was in administrative depending on Torcello and did not have such privileges as Murano. Burano has acquired particular importance only in the 16th century when the local women do ruching - the technology of manufacturing the Venetians brought under their control in Cyprus. After quite a bit of time buranskoe lace began to export to Europe, Durga, and it conquered the aristocratic world. But in the 18th century began the decline of the craft, which could be revived only after 1872, the year when Burano school was opened for the production of lace. This profession exists to this day, although only a small number of skilled workers now uses the traditional technique of weaving. Despite this, buranskoe lace is one of the symbols of Venice.

Another "highlight" of Burano are its little colored houses, so pleasing to the eye of the tourist. Interesting fact - if today a resident of Burano want to paint your house, first he will have to send an application to the appropriate administration and wait for permission indicating certain colors that can be used when painting!

Among the other attractions of Burano is a must-see museum of Venetian lace, only the local church of San Martino bell tower with a sloping height of 52 meters and paintings by the great Gianbattista Tiepolo and Baldassare Galuppi Piazza, named after the composer born here.
