Vienna Secession, also known as the Union of Austrian Artists House was built in 1897 by a group of Austrian artists, among whom were: Gustav Klimt, Wilhelm List, Josef Hoffmann, Olbrich and others. The need for construction of such facilities has arisen because of conservatism and traditional views on art predominating Viennese House of Artists.
The building was attended by artists, architects and sculptors. The financial side of the question, too, was on the artists, the city is, for its part, has allocated land for the construction. The building has a large gilded dome, interior and windows made of colored glass and designed by the Moser. Above the entrance to the building was carved the phrase "Every era its art, every art its freedom." Artists were concerned, first of all, study the possibilities of art, beyond the academic tradition. They hoped to create a new style, which is to be deprived of historical influence. Group received considerable credit for its exhibition activity, which allowed to present several French Impressionists Viennese public. The 14th exhibition of the Secession, designed by Josef Hoffmann, was devoted to Ludwig van Beethoven and became especially popular. However, the June 14, 1905 Gustav Klimt and several other Secession artists left because of disagreements on the artistic concept.
During World War II, the building was badly damaged and was restored in 1963. Image Secession was chosen as the theme for the commemorative coins: coins minted euro 100 10 November 2004. Currently, the Secession held about 20 exhibitions annually.
