Ethnological Museum - the largest ethnographic and anthropological museum in Austria. Located in one of the parts of the former imperial residence of the Hofburg. The museum was founded in 1876: it was then that appeared ethnological department at the Museum of Natural History. The first exhibits were brought before that, in the first decade of the 19th century. Many travelers and explorers helped gather a collection. Museum archives replenished quickly, so in 1928, Ethnological Museum began to work independently from the Natural History Museum. So, now the museum has about 250 thousand different items from all corners of the world: Asia, Oceania, Africa.

The museum exposition makes its visitors to learn more about the development of mankind on earth, the similarities and differences of cultures and traditions of different peoples of the world to get acquainted with the peculiarities of life and traditional crafts. The museum is proud of its valuable exhibits. For example, the leader of the Aztec crown made of feathers of various birds, a collection of James Cook. Also of great interest are bronze ware, vintage textiles, findings from the Amazon region and more.

Oriental Collection is presented by the ancient Japanese masks, which date back to the 8th century. They brought Franz Ferdinand, who travels to the East in the 19th century. Great contribution to the museum's collection made Baron von Hugel, who was an ardent admirer of the researcher and Southeast Asia. Thanks to Baron appeared in the museum collection of Indian jewelry, weapons, as well as various religious artefacts.
