Varaždinska Castle - one of the landmarks of the city, which is a model of defensive architecture. At the time, Varaždinska castle was one of the strongholds in the struggle against the Turkish intervention. It is here that the residence of the Croatian-Slavonic Military District. This is a powerful strategic and military-political significance is assigned to the lock until the XVII century, when the military headquarters was moved to Koprivnica.
By the end of the XVI century Varaždin Castle replaced more than one owner. In 1397, the castle belonged to Hermann II of Celje, which was the construction of the Hungarian-Croatian king Sigismund II. After some time, Germany also went to the area of Zagorje and Cakovec. From 1585 and until 1925 the owners of the construction was the family Erdёd. By the way, representatives of dynasty occupy one of the highest government positions in Varazdin until 1845.

It is known that the oldest part of the castle is its tower of the Gothic style, and there is information that is already in the XV century it had palisades, and surrounded the building trench. Presumably, the east tower and walls were built around 1524.

Reconstruction was begun in 1544 by Baron Ivan Ungnadom, at that time - the owner of the castle. Work is carried out one of the famous Italian architects. The castle was surrounded by a moat of the Drava and grew around the earth mounds. There were also loopholes and made a special platform for the use of heavy artillery, and a square tower in the late Gothic style was supplemented by another floor. The castle was also added a lot of architectural detail inherent in the early Renaissance: stone buttresses in the form of Doric columns, wooden and stone balustrades, balconies and arcades painted facades. Reconstruction of the castle was completed in 1575.
In 1705 the castle was another reconstruction, in which the bridge was built between the northern wall and a square tower, which allowed to divide the courtyard into two halves. Until 1933, the castle was surrounded by trenches, and the first green areas were planted in 1938. But the real park, which can be seen today, was issued in 1952.
