In the town of Uglich, street Sharkov, is Alexis monastery which is the oldest of all the monasteries of the city. It is located just behind the Stone creek, on a small hill in the past bore the name of the Flaming Mountains. The base of the monastery was in 1371 with the support of the Moscow Metropolitan Alexy. As you know, Alexis played quite an active role in political life, for which reason and took the decision to build in these parts of the monastery, which was also a political move. At that time the principality of Moscow, which is gaining strength, sought to extend its influence to other principalities.

In 1584 when Alexius monastery was built a stone church - the Temple of Metropolitan Alexy - from the church reached us only destroyed the remains of the walls.

For a long time the other monastery buildings were wooden. Alexius monastery always enjoyed great sympathy among the royal personages. In the 19th century, the monastery acted orphanage and opened a library and a school for the children of the servants; homeless people could eat at the monastery.

The most important feature of the monastery is visible from afar "Marvelous" Assumption Church, equipped with three tents. The name 'Wondrous' she received immediately after the construction in 1628 - at that time the city is gradually recovering from the deadly Polish-Lithuanian ruin. Between 1608 and 1612 years was held siege Uglich Poles, for which reason the gate of the monastery were hiding about five hundred people. Soon, the Poles were able to get into the monastery, and all the inhabitants of the town were killed. Most likely, the first tent-roofed church was built in memory of the tragically killed townspeople, because it is hipped temples were built in honor of the blessed memory of the victims or in honor of new victories. Three massive tent were erected as a symbolic monument to the city of Uglich.

Assumption temple stands on a raised basement and on the west side to adjoin the longest refectory room. The main composition is in the central part equipped with three white tents and the same number of apses, a few echoes the tent top of the temple. Setting the center of the tent is made in the form of belts kokoshniks, while it is slightly raised and shifted to the west, for which reason the total composition looks bulkier. Decorating the walls are made very laconically, because they set off the tents, and at the edges of the faces are the projections-herds, which gives a light and delicate look. Decoration apses performed using smart arkaturno columnar-belts, which gives the church a festive look. In the interior of the church is small, because the tents themselves are made "blind".

Not far from the church of the Assumption is later built the cathedral in the name of John the Baptist, which appeared in 1681. The building of the cathedral presented pretty massive and wide, equipped with five huge heads, placed on a fairly subtle drums. More squat temple makes extensive refectory room, which further increases its stockiness compared with nearby high Assumption Church.

Next to the apse of the cathedral until 1917 was the monastery cemetery in whose territory nearly 600 years buried honorary residents of Uglich and monks. During the period of Soviet power destroyed the cemetery, and today in its place is a rose garden.

When Alexius monastery Church of the Epiphany acted together with the refectory room, and there was the bell tower.

On the perimeter on all sides, the monastery was surrounded by a fence made of stone, and the Saints were the gates. None of the buildings to date, there has not been preserved or partially, for example, gates and fences.

In the 30s of the 20th century the monastery was closed and some of its buildings was given to the housing. Currently, the monastery is acting nunnery.
