Church of the Epiphany in the village Tolmachev was built in 1825. The first mention in the annals of the village Tolmachev relates to the mid-16th century. At this time there were two wooden church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in honor of St. Nicholas. In the late 16th century during the invasion of the Lithuanian churches were burned. In the "Time of Troubles" of famine, pestilence, Lithuanian invasion, the consequences oprichnina, the population of this place died or gone south. The land here was empty almost half a century: the fields were overgrown, the village destroyed.
At the invitation of Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich in the 17th century moved here Karels, leaving the Swedes captured the Western Karelia. They went from their native land because of the forcible treatment of a Lutheran, because of huge taxes and other harassment. With the arrival of Karel life Tolmachi revived. The second birth of the village Tolmachev considered mid-17th century. Karelian carpenters were excellent, they are well built and houses and temples.
In 1729, the village had two wooden churches. One - in honor of the Epiphany, the second - Bogoroditsky Nicholas. Each temple has a wooden belfry with three bells. Until 1729 belonged to Count Tolmachev, president of the Admiralty Board FM Apraksin, so I enjoyed his village temples of charity. Over time, the dilapidated wooden Church of the Epiphany, and then burned. And in 1789, in its place was built a new wooden church of the same name.
In 1825, in Tolmachi built a new stone church, which reached our time. Wooden church with a bell tower was moved to the ancient Karelian cemetery, in 1836 it was consecrated in honor of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God (it was demolished in the 1940s).
The stone Church of the Epiphany had three altars in the cold part of the church (under the dome) - in honor of the Epiphany, in the dining room to the right - in honor of the Nativity of the Virgin, on the left - in honor of St. Nicholas.
The temple was built in the style of "Empire" of granite and brick. His half-decorated relief and other decorative elements. The temple was full of paintings, both inside and outside. A four-tiered bell tower was crowned graceful spire. The dome of the temple was blue with bronze stars. In Tolmachevskaya church icons were brought from their homeland Karelians of the churches where they were parishioners.
The iconostasis of the Church of the Epiphany was the image of St. Nicholas, which was carved on a stone cross. Cross this, according to legend, was found by shepherds near the old cemetery. At this place it was built a chapel where stood the image of the saint. After the chapel collapsed, the image was transferred to the church.
In 1901 the parish belonged to the Tolmachevskaya 4287 people. At Church of the Epiphany was a good choir, it sang the locals, has a beautiful voice.
Once the church was surrounded by a cast iron fence with three entrances with patterned wrought iron gate. Over the fence grew birch - clerics were buried here. From the east to the temple adjoined grove of birch and linden trees, which was the very first in the village cemetery, surrounded by a wall of wild stones and boulders. In the 1930s, they were disassembled and used for construction of the road.
Epiphany church was closed in 1948 and came to a complete standstill. Its revival began in 1998, the local Orthodox enthusiasts. It was organized by the religious community of Epiphany Church Tver diocese. On the collected donations started repairing the temple.
In 1999 the church was consecrated in part. The parish priest arrived rector Father Sergius. On weekends and holidays the service began.
