Tucker Perk Art Gallery is located in the heart of Townsville, on the eastern tip of Flinders Street. Today in the exhibition galleries are more than 2 million jobs, representing the art of North Queensland and the nearby tropical region. Here you can see the modern art of Queensland and Papua New Guinea, learn about the art of the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait admire the works of famous artists. Besides permanent exhibitions in the gallery regularly hosts a variety of workshops devoted to the arts, lectures, seminars, performances of artists, theatrical performances.
Every two years the gallery is organizing a unique event - "ephemeral", which is held for 10 days in September. At this time, the main promenade Townsville - Strand - turns into an exhibition hall: a variety of sculptures located along the 2-kilometer strip of surf in the open air.
The building in which the gallery is located today, was built in 1885. "United Bank of Australia" for its northern branch. The original building was a one-story, but at the beginning of 1930 was completed second floor. In 1980, the Townsville City Council bought the historic building of the first art gallery in the city. And in 1981 the Art Gallery was opened to the public - it was named in honor of Alderman Perk Tucker, a former mayor of Townsville from 1976 to 1980.
