Korsun Virgin Cathedral is one of the most magnificent temples Toropets. There once was a miraculous icon of the Korsun Mother of God. According to legend, it was written by Luke the Evangelist himself during the life of the Virgin.

In the XII century on the petition Reverend Euphrosyne of Polotsk icon brought from Ephesus in Polotsk. In 1239 she got in Toropets, because the princess of Polotsk Paraskeva gave it to the city in honor of the wedding of Alexander Nevsky.

In 1676, by order of Alexei Mikhailovich, in Toropets began to build a stone Korsun Virgin Cathedral, stood until the 18th century, but burned in a large fire. But the wonder-working icons and church utensils saved. After that, residents Toropets decided that the city needed a new cathedral.

As an architect of Korsun Mother of God Church made Osip Spirkin from Smolensk. And in 1795, construction began on the cathedral. It progressed slowly. This was due to the fact that it was at this time the state border moved far to the west, Toropets ceased to be a border town and fell into disrepair. Therefore toropchanam had to apply for funding for the construction of a sovereign. On selected Paul I was arranged iconostasis handmade from the right side which in the gilded icon case was the miraculous icon. In 1804 the cathedral solemnly consecrated Archpriest Nechayev.

In 1840, the cathedral chapter were gilded. In 1879 the cathedral was surrounded on three sides by a stone wall with two latticed iron gates and five towers, one of which was a chapel in honor of Alexander Nevsky. On the other side of the road opposite the cathedral stood a brick four-tiered bell tower, which was the worst city bell, weighing 400 pounds.

Donors Cathedral, besides Paul I, were the Emperor Alexander I, Dmitry Botkin.

During the Soviet era in the cathedral services were not performed. Currently, the main temple of the city is recovering thanks to charitable donations toropchan.
