Church of the Ascension was built in 1789 at the expense of the landowner Andrey Abakumov (according to other sources, the landlord Gabriel Luchaninova).

In the late 18th century by decree of Catherine II all city cemeteries had to be taken outside the city limits. Outside the city it was built three churches in the cemetery with them. One of these churches was the Church of the Ascension. On Ascension Cemetery Dispose parishioners of Annunciation and Transfiguration churches Pokrovo Nicholas parish. Ascension Church had one throne - in honor of the Ascension. On the bell tower before it was four bells, the largest weighed 16 pounds and 15 pounds. Under the church is a crypt. In Soviet times, the church was closed. For several months during the occupation he was acting.

By the end of the 20th century the church was almost destroyed and was not subject to restoration. But in 1999, in the church with the blessing of the Archbishop of Tver and Kashin began restoration work. In 2001, on the feast of the Assumption held its first worship service in the church after many years of neglect.

In the ancient cemetery of the Ascension preserved ancient tombs. Here are buried brothers and parents of Patriarch Tikhon, which was erected on the grave chapel.
