Church of the Ascension was built in 1789 at the expense of the landowner Andrey Abakumov (according to other sources, the landlord Gabriel Luchaninova).

In the late 18th century by decree of Catherine II all city cemeteries had to be taken outside the city limits. Outside the city it was built three churches in the cemetery with them. One of these churches was the Church of the Ascension. On Ascension Cemetery Dispose parishioners of Annunciation and Transfiguration churches Pokrovo Nicholas parish. Ascension Church had one throne - in honor of the Ascension. On the bell tower before it was four bells, the largest weighed 16 pounds and 15 pounds. Under the church is a crypt. In one of the vaults buried Senator, Privy Councilor, holder of many awards, member of the War of 1812, AI Abakumov, who constantly allocates funds for decoration and beautification of the temple. In 1827 he gave the church a huge icon of the Apostle Andrew in gilded salary. In 1841, Senator bequeathed the temple 4,300 rubles. In memory of the philanthropist on the wall of the church is a memorial plaque.

In 1840 the church was assigned to the Korsun Mother of God Cathedral own clergy and she did not have.

In Soviet times, the church was closed. For several months during the occupation he was acting.

By the end of the 20th century the church was almost destroyed and was not subject to restoration. But in 1999, in the church with the blessing of the Archbishop of Tver and Kashin began restoration work. In 2001, on the feast of the Assumption held its first worship service in the church after many years of neglect.

Today, Ascension Church to the cemetery through the efforts of its rector, priest George, together with the parishioners and benefactors acquire its former splendor. The church is the icon of St. Tikhon with relics, which gave the church, Patriarch Alexy II. Near the church built a beautiful lodge.

In the ancient cemetery of the Ascension preserved ancient tombs. Here are buried brothers and parents of Patriarch Tikhon, which was erected on the grave chapel. It also buried General Abakumov, Archpriest Vladimir Schukin, dean of Toropetzkaya County, his mother and son, the priest John Muzyrya with his family.
