One of the many attractions of the capital of Greek Macedonia, Thessaloniki, which is definitely worth a visit is the interesting ethnographic museum. It was founded in 1973, "Macedonian Association of Education."
The Ethnographic Museum is located in the building, better known as "Old Government House", as it is originally privately owned villa was handed over to the Municipality of Thessaloniki and was used as the residence of the governor, and then the Minister of Northern Greece. The building was built in 1905 by architect Eli Modiano in a beautiful place by the sea (the area of the estate as a whole is 5 hectares). This eclectic four-storey building (ground, 1st and 2nd floor and attic) with elements of Art Nouveau. Particularly impressive is the magnificent double balcony with stunning sea views.
The exhibition, presented in the museum, perfectly illustrates the history of the culture and tradition of Macedonia and Thrace. The museum's collection is vast and diverse (approximately 15,000 items). Here you can see textiles, embroidery, traditional local costumes, furniture, musical instruments, wood carving, weapons, household items, tools, woodworking and metalworking equipment and much more. The museum has a unique specialized library, as well as an impressive photo archive and library.
The main purpose of the Ethnographic Museum is acquainted with the history, traditions and culture of the region, as well as their popularization among the younger generation.
