The reserve "Vendicari", located in the province of Syracuse, between Avola and Pachino, covers an area of 1500 hectares. This is the southern marshes in Europe and unique in its environmental importance of the place - dozens of species of migratory birds stop here during their seasonal migrations. The best time for observing the feathered - December when the birds fly from the hot Sahara to their breeding grounds in northern Europe. Great chance to see here plovers, herons, flamingos, wild ducks, gulls, cormorants and stilts. Among the animals of the reserve there are hares, foxes, freshwater turtles, sea urchins, various frogs and snakes are numerous.
In addition, the reserve there are several interesting archaeological sites, which were found vessels of the ancient fish farms and the remains of a small necropolis. Preserved and watchtower, built in the Middle Ages, and several buildings ancient Greek and Roman periods. In the western part of the reserve, near the town of Noto, you can see a small Roman villa decorated with mosaics.
Vendicari, taken under protection in 1984, also boasts an incredible variety of ecosystems: there are rocky and sandy coast, bush areas, salty and freshwater marshes, salt lakes, heaths and cultivated fields. In the past, salt lakes were of paramount economic importance and, of course, ensure the development of tuna fishing, the reserve existed in the 15th century.
You can get here by different ways: one entrance is located in the town of Elora, another - near Cava delle Mosca with its famous beach of Cala Mosca, another access point located at Cittadella dei Maccari, site of an ancient Byzantine settlement, which today can be seen the ruins of a small temple and necropolis. Finally, the main entrance to the reserve is located at Torre Zveva with the surrounding wonderful beach.
