7 km southeast of the capital of the island of Kefalonia Argostoli, above the small village of Peratata is the Castle of St. George, or rather, the ruins of the once majestic buildings. This ancient fortification is one of the most famous historical attractions of the island.
Fortress St. George is located on a hill, a height of about 320 m. The most likely area in the vicinity of the castle has been inhabited since ancient times, as close to Mycenaean tombs were found. The first written records showing the strengthening of the hill, belong to the Byzantine period (12th century). Location of the castle was of great strategic importance, and its walls are well protected from pirate raids.
Castle in the form that we see today was built by the Venetians in the early 16th century until 1757 was the capital and administrative center of the island (known as the Castro). The building has a polygonal shape, and covers an area of 16,000 square meters. m. It was a well-fortified city with residential and public buildings, food stores, hospitals, prisons, etc. Next to a small area in the castle today you can see the ruins of the Catholic Church of St. Nicholas. After another earthquake fortress residents gradually moved in a well-protected natural harbor, where he founded a new capital (modern Argostoli).
Abandoned castle substantially suffered in 1953, when the island was a strong earthquake, but, nevertheless, massive walls survived. Afterwards was a partial reconstruction of the castle, and today it is open to the public.
From the top of the fortress of St. George offers stunning panoramic views.
