The ruins of the monastery of St. Birgitta located 6 kilometers to the east of the old Tallinn. This area is called Pirita is one of the most prestigious in the city. Quiet, peaceful place is great for restoring emotional balance. Already on the way to a quiet place, you will cover the state of calm. The road to the monastery takes place on the shore along the seaside boulevard and the Kadriorg Park, the path offers spectacular views over the water and the spiers of the old town - all this will calm you will put in order all the thoughts and feelings, charge you with energy.
The monastery was founded in 1407 with the support of 3 wealthy merchants of Tallinn. The structure belonged to the Order of St. Birgitta in Sweden. His name was in honor of the Order of the Swede Brigitta Gudmarsson, who was canonized in 1391. The architecture of the monastery looked like typical for those times sacred building in the late Gothic style. Originally, the monastery was a wooden structure, which in the first half of the 15th century was replaced by a stone. Completion of construction and the consecration of the monastery dates back to the year 1436.
A special feature is that living in a monastery, and the monks and nuns, and their paths do not cross. In the building of male and female has a separate room and separated the two courtyards. In the northern part of the monastery of St. Birgitta lived a nun, and in the south - the monks. Even during the services, the monks were just in the church, and the female part of the Lord's servants have on special balcony.
Unfortunately, the history of the monastery is short, and he had not lasted two centuries. In 1577, during the Livonian War sacral building was destroyed and have survived only the ruins of the monastery. In particular, today we can see only a rectangular church wall. The area in front of the monastery was used as a cemetery. The limestone burial crosses are still in rows facing the ruins of the monastery, dating back to the century before last.
Currently, the ruins of the monastery transformed into a unique attraction and a great place to relax. Every year there is the day of the monastery, passing along the traditional fair in the open air. Also, the majestic ruins - a place for concerts and tours.
In 2001 next to the ruins was built a new building, which became home to the nuns of the Order of St. Birgitta. Under the new monastery there is a small hotel, where guests can be not only Catholics.
