Stone stairs - one of the attractions of the city of Taganrog, it connects the Greek street from Pushkin promenade. The staircase was built by the wealthy Greek philanthropist - merchant Gerasimos Depaldo Yanukovych, according to his spiritual testament of December 1822, which read: "Build the descent to the exchange between the houses, and court advisor Kovalinski Greek Christ, what $ 15 thousand rubles."
The idea of building a ladder gave Colonel Pyotr Macedonian, Taganrog architect early nineteenth century, the author of the project is considered to be the architect Franz Boffo, and supervised construction work the engineer Anisimov. So, by September 1823 Stone staircase was ready.
Steps and slabs curbs were made of local limestone of Sarmatian, they descended toward the Gulf over 113 meters wide separated by thirteen sites with a total width of 5 degrees, 4 meters to 7 meters below. Thus, when viewed from the upper stage, the ladder all seemed the same width, and if below, the clear vision was visible. Later, this method was used in the construction of the Potemkin Stairs in Odessa. For a long time the ladder was known popularly as Depaldovskaya.
During the Crimean War in 1855, trying to climb the stairs to the city a detachment of British sailors Cossack squadron led by centurion Yermolov gunfire stopped the British.
Each of the sites offers a breathtaking view of the bay, on the court, standing in the roads and entering the harbor. This magnificent panorama left a large imprint on the life and work of famous residents of Taganrog and guests: writer Anton Chekhov, the poet NF Shcherbina, the Moscow Art Theatre actor A.L.Vishnevskogo, artist Synod-Popov, who was the first masters painted stone staircase.
In autumn 1879 a staircase was first planted. And in 1934 it began its reconstruction. Then it was planned to set up three dozen copies of antique sculptures such as "The boy taking out a splinter," "Boy with a goose", "Aphrodite Kapuansky" and others. Reconstruction ended the holiday May 1, 1935, completed the basic work, but then set the 30 Roman and Greek vases and sculptures 8, equipped with lighting fixtures and floodlights, and the bottom is a little square, where the rough trade of soft drinks and ice cream. The staircase has become a favorite vacation spot of locals and tourists.
However, it was not without missteps: apparently not thoroughly familiarized with the original project, the builders have narrowed down the stairs to 5 - 5, 4 meters around the descent, which violated the principle of the original spatial perspective. Now the top and bottom ladder have the same width, in contrast to the previously projected correctly estimated with considerable difference in their widths.
In 1945, at the top of the stairs built octagonal pedestal with a sundial.
Now staircase consists of 14 flights and 188 steps, the number of the steps in the march different - from 4 to 19. The famous children's writer Taganrog I.D.Vasilenko dedicated a stone staircase and a sundial one of the stories. Since 2003, the Day of the city of Taganrog hosts the annual race on the stone stairs.
In 2006, the limestone steps were replaced by granite, which undoubtedly will continue the life of this wonderful creation, although changed its historical flavor. In 2012, the stone staircase was included in the regional stage of the All-Russian contest "The Miracle of Russia 2012".
