Bismarck Tower - one of the 250 towers, monuments, built in the late nineteenth - early twentieth centuries in honor of Chancellor Otto von Bismarck. These towers were built in Europe, Australia, Africa and America. To date, 175 towers survived, among them the tower in the Polish city of Szczecin in the north-west of the country. This tower is considered the most expensive of all the other towers. Today the building is open to the public.
Construction of the tower began in 1899, but due to territorial problems has been delayed for several years. In 1910, Governor von Eisenhart announced the launch of the architectural competition to design the tower. The winner was Wilhelm Kreis, whose project was modeled after the Mausoleum of Theodoric the Great in Ravenna, Italy and the tomb of Cecilia Metella. The first stone of the future tower was built to commemorate the centenary of the Battle of Leipzig in 1913. The opening ceremony of the tower Bismarck held August 10, 1921. The total cost of the 25-meter tower was 200,000 DM.
In 2001, an agreement was signed to lease towers Irene and Adam Zalusski who had restored the tower and create in it a tourist center. The work, however, has not been launched, and in 2008 the city administration filed a lawsuit with the purpose of removing the tower tenants.
The tower is located atop a small hill surrounded by woods, in an industrial area, 6 km from the city center. The building is in need of restoration.
