The most famous attraction is the Great Mosque of Sousse. It was built in 850-851 years Emir Mohammed Abul Abbaz Aghlabid dynasty. The building was built like a mosque Sidi Okba Kairuanskuyu. The courtyard of the mosque and galleries were built in the 1650s, and the entire complex, including prayer rooms have been renovated in 60-70 years of the twentieth century.
The mosque is easily recognizable by the unusual appearance, because it resembles a building with two watchtowers in the south-east and north ends, that is a kind of military construction. Such a plan of the mosque is not accidental - it is used to perform the role of a defensive structure. During the time of the warrior with all Christians the mosque was increased in size - were completed new rooms and passages. The main feature of the mosque is the minaret, which is a staircase from the courtyard. The walls of the building, facing the courtyard, cut out numerous loopholes. Each is decorated with semicircular arches loophole and painted Kufic pattern. In XX century the building returned to its original appearance, removing some relatively recent construction.
The architectural composition of the mosque found several styles, including Roman: prayer halls and galleries patio decorated with Roman columns with elaborately carved marble capitals. The ceiling is painted galleries and vaulted carved designs.
In the mosque there is a museum with many relics, open to all visitors, but in the prayer halls only Muslims are allowed to enter.
