The picturesque island of Skiathos, which lies in the Aegean Sea, is famous not only for its magnificent beaches, but also an abundance of ancient monasteries. One of the most famous sacred monasteries of the island is the monastery of Panagia Kunistry (Virgin Kunistry). It is located in the middle of a pine forest on the southwest side of the island, about 13 km from the town of Skiathos.

The base of the monastery is associated with the appearance in these areas of the icon of the Virgin Mary. She was found with a rope tied to the branch of a pine. Icon fluttered in the wind and radiates a divine light. Perhaps that is why she is called "Kounistra" (in Greek "Kouno" means "the thrill of movement"). However, there are other versions. On the eve of the solemn procession with the icon of the Virgin Mary's foot moves from Skiathos Town over the mountain to the monastery of Panagia Kunistry. KATHOLIKON temple is a nave basilica with a dome. The interior of the church construction is impressive abundance of beautiful frescoes. Also it deserves special attention the magnificent gilded wooden iconostasis.

Not so long ago in the monastery was a large-scale restoration. Monastery of Panagia Kunistry significantly smaller monastery of Panagia Evangelista and has a modest history. However, the unique atmosphere of calm and comfort, prevails in the monastery and the special charm of the picturesque surroundings attracts many visitors.
