Church of the Assumption of Our Lady in Sibenik will be interesting to see fans of the Baroque style, although the construction of the church began long before this art movement. Construction of the church began in the XII century and lasted until the XIII century. At first the church belonged to the Templars, then the brotherhood of flagellants.
In 1386 the church and monastery, located nearby, were transferred to Santa Clara admirers, and in September 1493 the building was handed over to the Benedictine Order. Until 1808 the church owned a Benedictine convent. In those days the church was consecrated in honor of the Holy Savior. Subsequently, the church became the property of the Serbian Orthodox Church. Now it is a rare collection of religious objects and icons of Italo-Cretan origin. The altar of the temple is decorated with many valuable icons.
The church was damaged by fire in 1457, 1651 and 1723. Its present appearance of the church found in the XVIII century, it was then that were built splendid baroque bell tower of the work of Ivan Skok. Thanks to the reconstruction of the church was a unique structure of its kind on the Adriatic coast.
