The Freedom Monument is dedicated to the heroes of the Shipka Pass Defense - one of the key events in the history of Russian-Turkish conflict of 1877-1878. and the struggle of the Bulgarian people for liberation. In this battle, the Bulgarian volunteers fought shoulder to shoulder with the army of the Russian Empire against the Ottoman invaders. The monument is located at the peak Stoletov, named after one of the heroes of the battle - Russian General Nikolai G. Stoletov. Freedom monument was designed by sculptor Alexander Andreev and the architect Atanas Donkova and built on the donations of the inhabitants of Bulgaria.
Every August around the monument, residents and guests of the country may be witnessing the historical reconstruction of the events of Defense of Shipka. At the same time a memorial service is held here on the fallen for the liberation of the country, Bulgarian, Russian, Ukrainian, Romanian, Belarusian and Finnish soldiers and citizens and statesmen of Bulgaria laying the base of the memorial wreaths of flowers in gratitude for the freedom and independence of his people.
The monument has the form of a stone tower in the form of truncated pyramid height of over 30 meters. Above the entrance to the tower is a giant lion (the height and length of 4 to 8 meters) and a statue of a woman made out of bronze and symbolizing the victory of the Bulgarian people over the invaders and the end of Ottoman rule.
