Sfax Medina is located in the heart of the city and is surrounded by high crenellated stone walls, built in the middle of the X century. Founded in the IX century by Sultan Ahmed Bin El Aghlaba this area (one of the few medieval cities of Tunisia) was able to avoid global reconstructions and come down to us in almost original form. It seems that all the old area is separated from the modern and sufficiently developed two-kilometer city wall with watch towers, bastions and forts, which are small cafeteria. They offer a wonderful view of the city.

Sfax is constantly subjected to invasions. At the time when it was still a small town a few times robbed Bedouin tribes, in the XII century the town was captured by the Sicilians. Thereafter, in Sfax attacked Catalans, Aragonese and finally Hafsids who occupied the city in the XIII century, gradually began to restore the building, walls and monuments.

Medina Sfax are decorated gate of Bab script Sofa with three arches. On weekends, the whole area is boiling - it carried the famous bazaars, markets are developed.

In the middle of the Medina is the Grand Mosque, built in the IX century. In XVII century palace is the Museum of Arts and Popular Traditions Dar Dzhelluli, which has an interesting permanent exhibition. Its exhibits - furniture, clothing, utensils, spices, ancient weapons and precious manuscripts. On the upper floors of the museum houses a collection of national women's clothes.
