Fort St. George - a fortress, located on the hill of Monte Poole. It is one of 26 forts built in the area of the Austro-Hungarians to protect the territory from invasions from the sea in the XIX-XX centuries. Pula at that time was the main port of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. According to the military terminology that is commonly used to characterize these permanent fortifications in the XIX century, the fort of St. George is the main naval base of the Austrian fleet in the region.
Fort St. George is located near the city cemetery of the town of Pula. Besides the fortress there remained eight artillery posts, trenches, tunnels and other interesting from the perspective of the military history of the place.
Like most of the Austro-Hungarian fortress, located near Pula, this fortress has a circular shape. The diameter of the base is equal to 35 meters. The fortress built of stone blocks, has a circular courtyard and cistern in the middle. Within the walls of the fortress done by windows to conduct firing of guns and cannons.
On all sides the castle is surrounded by trees that provide additional protection. From the fortress offers a magnificent view of the surroundings.
