To prevent the extinction of its capital from the face of the earth, Charles IV ordered to establish a third area, which is called the new place.
The heart of this district is Prague Charles Square. It is her New Town Hall, which was built in 1348 by order of the king himself. About a hundred years later the town hall acquired a high tower (70 meters) with a clock, which in our time is the chapel of the Virgin Mary and an observation deck. Up there, breaking the 212 steps, anyone can. On the ground floor of the town hall you can see a large room, decorated in the Gothic style. The chapel is usually confessed prisoners who were kept in the same building, as the first floor of the tower served as a prison for a long time.
In 1559, the town hall was almost completely destroyed first by a lightning strike caused a fire, and then a strong wind. It was decided to rebuild it all over again, but in the Renaissance style. In 1905 large-scale reconstruction took place, which resulted in the Town Hall acquired its modern look.
Near the entrance of the building you can see the standard of length. It is attached at a height of 2 meters on the wall of the building.
Hall played great importance in the history of Prague and the Czech Republic. From its windows disgruntled citizens in 1419 threw out the mayor and other officials, where to begin the Hussite wars.
