In 1680, the plague came to Plzen, which claimed hundreds of lives. When it became clear that the epidemic had passed, the grateful inhabitants of Heaven ordered the famous sculptor Christian Widmann manufacturing Mariana column. In 1681 she was solemnly installed on the Market Square, and since then has not changed its position. Therefore, being in the center of Pilsen and beating the left of the Cathedral of St. Bartholomew, stop in front of the Renaissance column and think that it has more than three centuries.
At the top of the column Plague can see a statue of the Virgin, which is an exact copy of the image, which is stored in the Cathedral of St. Bartholomew is considered a real treasure of Pilsen. Gothic statue of the Virgin Mary dominates the sculptural composition depicting the revered Czech saints Bartholomew, Roch, Floriana, Wenceslas and Rosalia. These monuments belong to the local master cutter Jan Meyzlika.
In 1714, after a new plague to the existing images on the tower were added a few more. Now Marian column is decorated with statues of three other saints Barbara, Peter of Alcantara and Francis Xavier.
Plague Column repeatedly subjected to reconstruction. The last major renovation took place in the 90s of the last century.
Now, the composition is in the shadow of the famous cathedral and Pilsen is not immediately evident. However, it is perfectly in harmony with the ancient buildings, which are the perfect backdrop for her. recently Mariana column Pilsen was recognized cultural monument of the Czech Republic.
