Orton - the perfect place for those interested in history and archeology. Like many other surrounding towns in the province of Chieti, Ortona boasts a huge number of monuments of the Middle Ages. But it is also the site of the famous Battle of Ortona in World War II. That battle was one of the most important battles of World War II and one of the worst in history - Winston Churchill called it "Little Stalingrad". Those who want to learn the details of military action, should definitely visit the Museum of the Battle of Ortona, entirely dedicated to the sad episode.

No less interesting and Orton medieval monuments, such as the Church of St. Thomas the Apostle, the Santa Maria da Constantinople Santa Maria della Olivastro, Santa Caterina, Santissima Trinita and San Rocco. Orton itself was probably founded Italic tribes. In 2005, during archaeological excavations next to the castle was discovered Bronze Age settlement. It is around this settlement in Roman times and the town grew. For several centuries, Orton remained part of the Roman Empire until it was annexed by the Kingdom of the Lombards. And in the 803 th year of the Franks, who had seized the town, made it part of the county of Chieti.

In the first half of the 15th century were built defensive walls Orton powerful because at that time the city was in a state of conflict with neighboring Lanciano. And in the middle of the 15th century the port of Ortona was destroyed by the Venetians. After becoming a part of the united Italy in 1860 Orton was one of the first resorts on the Adriatic coast.
