Ilori Church - is one of the ancient temples of Abkhazia. It is located east of the town of Ochamchira, in the small village of Ilori. The patron of the church is considered to be St. George.
According to historical records, the church was built in the XI Art. There is a legend that tells about the causes that gave rise to the construction of Ilori church. According to legend, the local prince while hunting in the forest wounded deer. A wounded animal, running away from the prince, hidden among the bushes. Prince continued to pursue its prey. Traces of a fleeing animal hunter led to the ruins of the ancient sanctuary. There he saw something unusual - namely, the wounded deer, who laid his head on the throne with a high cross in the sanctuary. After seeing the prince realized that the animal is under the patronage of St. George. He left the deer alive and ordered to build a church on the site in honor of this saint.
Ilori Church - it is very beautiful, simple, odnozalny temple altar which houses a small semicircle. The room of the church are covered with stone curved arch resting on projecting from the walls of large pilasters. The temple has three entrances - the northern, western and southern. At different times for them they were added chapels. Light falls into the church with the help of five small windows.
Ilori Church is surrounded by a fence with a gate. According to sources, next to it in the Middle Ages were arranged crowded fair. This temple has long enjoyed great popularity not only in the country but also abroad - here come the pilgrims from all over the surrounding area. Earlier, the church was a miraculous icon of St. George.
The interior of the church was once very luxurious. The fame of the silver and gold liturgical vessels and bowls, which were stored within its walls, spread throughout the country. To date, the Ilori church contains only a small portion of those treasures.
During the period of Ottoman rule the church, like many other temples of Abkhazia, was severely damaged by fire. Around the middle of the XIX century. the church was remodeled and covered with iron. Exterior and interior walls of the monastery plastered, with inscriptions have been preserved in the alphabet "Asomtavruli", as well as reliefs of the facade of the church.
Currently, Ilori Church - a working temple and one of the major religious sites of the city of Ochamchira.
