State Museum of Oriental Art, located in the center of Moscow, has the largest collection (more than 147 thousand items) of works of art of the Far and Middle East, Buryatia and Chukotka, the Caucasus, Transcaucasia, Central Asia and Kazakhstan. It also has a large collection of paintings by Nicholas Roerich and SN Roerich.

The museum occupies the East "House of Lunin" on Nikitsky Boulevard. This former estate of Lieutenant General P. Lunin, a monument of architecture built in the early 19th century. The author of the building project is considered to be the architect D.Zhilyardi. The main facade is decorated with a loggia with Corinthian columns and stucco. The ensemble of the estate is a fine example of building in Moscow at the time.

Created Museum October 30, 1918. The museum deals with not only an exhibition, but also cultural, educational and scientific activities. In 1991, the Decree of the President of the Russian Museum was added to the "valuable objects of cultural heritage of Russia."
