Moscow Art Academic Theatre named after M. Gorky exists today, was founded in 1987. Drama Theatre under the artistic direction of Tatiana Doronin considers itself the successor of the Moscow Art Theater, which existed since 1898 under the artistic direction of Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko.

In 1987 O. Efremov has pioneered the separation of the theater into two different creative teams. Moscow Art Theatre. Chekhov under the leadership of O. Efremov, and Moscow Art Theatre. Gorky led by T. Doronin.

Moscow Art Theatre. Gorky is located on Tverskoy Boulevard. The theater building was built in 1973. The initiative belonged to the construction of the then Minister of Culture EA Furtsevoy. Moscow Art Theatre. Gorky carefully preserves the traditions of the old Moscow Art Theater. After the division of the theater, the Art Theatre under the direction of T.Doroninoy defined his future path as a "return to the path of the great Stanislavsky."

In October 1987, the theater opened with the premiere of the play by Maxim Gorky "The Lower Depths." Theatre has remained faithful to the traditions laid down by the founders of the Moscow Art Theatre. Since then, the theater put more than seventy performances of the works of Russian and foreign classics. Notable performances - "The White Guard", "Zoyka Apartment," "The Cherry Orchard," "Crazy Jourdain," "Vassa Zheleznova."
